Letters of Milton McIntyre Brown, 1916-1918.

Collection consists chiefly of the letters of Milton McIntyre Brown to various family members while he was in Belgium and France as a member of the 324th Field Artillery in the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. In a letter, 1917 September 20, Brown writes to Bruce Brown of his attempts to become a second lieutenant; an offer he has received to work for the Red Cross setting up a business department like the one he has been working with for the Relief Commission of Belgium and his job as a censor and consequent altercations with the Paris Edition of the Chicago Tribune. Of interest are two letters, 1918 October 1 and 26, to his brothers Bruce and Bob respectively giving excellent descriptions of camp life and mentioning German shelling and the soldiers' reactions to the use of poison gas. In a letter, August 16, no year, Brown writes to Bruce Brown asking him to send back a copy of Milton Brown's "Gloria Victus" concerning the deportation of Belgian workmen. Also include letter, 1916 June 10, from Mrs. Bruce Brown, New York City, to "My dearest boys" regarding the departure of two of her sons for overseas.
